  • Moulding boxes (also known as flasks) hold the moulding sand and pattern in place to form a cavity for metal casting. A fix moulding box means the top and bottom parts are fixed in shape and dimension, ensuring consistency and repeatability.
  • Fabricated from sturdy metal materials (usually mild steel or cast iron) to resist wear and deformation under repetitive use and high pressure. It is composed of two parts Cope (top half) and Drag (bottom half). These are aligned using dowel pins or guides to ensure accurate mould matching.
Steps in Operation :

A pattern is placed inside the drag. Foundry sand is packed around the pattern in both the drag and cope. After compacting, the boxes can be removed or kept fixed depending on the type. The pattern is withdrawn, leaving behind a cavity matching the shape of the part. Molten metal is poured into the cavity. After cooling, the box is opened (if separable), and the casting is removed.
