Foundry Moulding Boxes:

Foundry Moulding Boxes, also known as flask boxes, are essential tools used in the sand casting process in foundries. They serve as the rigid frames that hold the moulding sand in place around a pattern to form the cavity into which molten metal is poured.

  • Materials: Typically made from cast iron, steel, or aluminum for durability and resistance to deformation. Lightweight materials like Aluminium are used for smaller or manual operations.
  • Alignment Features: Equipped with dowel pins, guide pins, or locating pins to ensure perfect alignment between cope and drag.
  • Handles/Clamps: Handles or lifting lugs for manual or crane handling. Clamps or locking mechanisms to secure cope and drag during moulding and pouring.
  • Ventilation and Rigidity: Designed to withstand the pressure of ramming and pouring without deformation. May include vents or be designed to allow gases to escape during metal pouring.
  • Open or Closed Bottom: Open-bottom boxes allow for direct placement on the floor or moulding board. Closed-bottom boxes are used when more structure is required.
  • Two-Part Construction (Cope and Drag):
Cope: The top half of the moulding box.
Drag: The bottom half. Sometimes, a third part called the cheek is added for more complex castings.
  • Reusability: Designed for multiple uses; sturdy construction allows for repeated casting cycles.
Foundry Moulding Boxes Applications:
  • Used in sand casting for creating metal components in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and machinery.
  • Suitable for manual or mechanized moulding processes.
